Native Plant Habitat Maintenance at South Region Landfills

HRS provides native plant habitat maintenance services at the South Region Landfills for this multiple-year contract.

Project Facts
  • County of Orange, Waste & Recycling
  • San Juan Capistrano, California
  • 250-acre mitigation area

The Challenge

The maintenance efforts are focused on the 250-acre mitigation area consisting of several habitat types at the Prima Deshecha Landfill. HRS staff performs on-going weed and invasive eradication and maintenance at these sites to keep these areas in line to meet their performance standards. HRS uses an adaptive management approach while working in these areas to achieve the overall goals of the project.

The Solution

More than 10,000 plants and 20 acres of hydroseed were installed by HRS staff to increase native cover in various areas that have been slower to develop. The HRS team used a pulley/zip-line set up to deliver the plants to the steep planting area. This saved time and resources, and resulted in a more efficient planting effort.

Maintenance activities include planting, seeding, weed control, pest control, irrigation installation and repairs, trash/debris removal, and container plant protection.

In Our Words

“We meet regularly with the client to discuss the progress of the habitat areas and provide recommended actions to aide in the success of the sites. Adaptive management is key for this large, multi-habitat site.”
